The Mystery of the Origin of Life

In 1952, Stanley Miller and Harold Urey successfully did an experiment that changed the “Origin of Life” world. Using a beaker, they put a series of chemicals they thought would represent the chemicals present around four billion years ago in our earliest days as a planet, passed an electric current through the chemicals like the sun might do, and produced five different kinds of amino acids, one of the four basic building blocks of the cell. The Miller-Urey experiment was truly a major event, and it gave Origin of Life Scientists hope that they could prove life could start on our planet without the help of God.

Dr. James Tour is one of the leading nanotechnologists in the world. He builds cars out of molecules that he can drive through the body. He knows how to put a drill on his car and kill bad cells. That is smart. He is also a devout Christian, but he never refers to his Christian faith to prove that all the Origin of Life Scientists have done since 1952 is prove that the cell is so complex we don’t know how to make one, and we are not even close.

Dr. Tour explains that in early earth there were no laboratory notebooks. If something evolves over 400 million years and then something goes wrong, the cell is dead. With no record you must go back 400 million years. This is why some statistical scientists say the chances of life starting on the planet from chemicals and sunlight is statistically, zero! To make this even more impossible, molecules have no brain. They do not know they are moving toward life. In fact, Dr. Tour states that molecules do not naturally move toward forming life and no experiment has ever shown otherwise.

Origin of Life Scientists talk about how “time” is the great gift of the origin of life on our planet. They speak of billions of years, and we all pretend to believe that anything can happen given billions of years. However, time is not the friend one would think it is. For example, once a carbohydrate is formed, one of the basic building blocks of a cell, the scientist stops the experiment and declares a carbohydrate was formed. In early earth there is nothing to stop the reactions, carbohydrates quickly caramelize, and very quickly you have nothing but garbage. Time is not necessarily our friend in explaining how life formed without God.

When scientists do lab experiments, they are always using the purest forms of molecules they get, and then re-purifying at every stage to keep their molecular work stable. Impurities build up quickly and destroy the experiment. Just like what would happen in early earth days. The life that would spring forth from a primordial soup is a fanciful cartoon placed in text books for our children to consume and believe the propaganda. The simplest cells could never form without the purest of situations.

So, let’s give the Origin of Life Scientists what they have never created, all the building blocks for a cell, all the nucleic acids (including DNA and RNA), proteins, lipids and glycans. Let’s assume that an early earth formed all the different forms of each of these building blocks at the same time, and then started putting them together. They must be put together in the right order or the whole thing falls apart and we have to go back 400 million years. Scientists have no clue what the right order is. These four reasons are only the beginning of explaining why it is seemingly impossible for Origin of Life Scientists to create life. Only there are many other things they have learned about cells that they do not understand and cannot replicate.

Dr. Tour has done much research since and Origin of Life Scientists continue to be clueless about how to make life. I can make it simple for them. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…” I believe that. In Deuteronomy 13:3 we read, “…you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
